Pontevedra

Pontevedra es la capital de la provincia del mismo nombre, situada en el sur de Galicia, en el noroeste de España. Como capital provincial, es una ciudad administrativa, turística y de servicios. Es además la cabecera de la comarca de Pontevedra, y capital de las Rías Bajas.

Limita al norte con los municipios de Barro y Moraña, al noreste con el municipio de Campo Lameiro, al este con el municipio de Cotobad, al sureste con el municipio de Puentecaldelas, al sur con el municipio de Sotomayor, al suroeste con los municipios de Vilaboa y Marín, al oeste con el océano Atlántico (ría de Pontevedra) y el municipio de Poyo, al noroeste con el municipio de Meis. Al sur tiene una pequeña salida a la Ría de Vigo, en el punto de El Castillo (en gallego: O Castelo), donde existe una pequeña isla (Isla del Castillo) que pertence al término municipal de Pontevedra.

No sería hasta el siglo XIX cuando con la creación de las provincias y designación de Pontevedra como capital la ciudad resurgiera, al aparecer nuevas instituciones y servicios que trajeron población y dinero. A principios del siglo XX, antes de la Guerra Civil Española Pontevedra era un hervidero social y cultural, pero ante la imposibilidad del buen uso del puerto por falta de calado, la industria se decantó por Vigo, ciudad abierta al mar y con uno de los mejores puertos del mundo. Actualmente Pontevedra vive una segunda juventud, viendo como su población aumenta en detrimento de los otros grandes núcleos de Galicia, que ven como sus habitantes se trasladan a los municipios limítrofes.

Geografía

Pontevedra se encuentra en el fondo de la ría del mismo nombre, en la desembocadura del Lérez. Está asentada en una loma rocosa relativamente aplanada por la erosión que, aunque no es de mucha altura, ha obligado a que el río Lérez la tenga que rodear por el norte antes de abrirse a la ría. Ello hace que las únicas calles algo empinadas sean las que bajan a la zona de orillamar y del río. Este emplazamiento siempre fue muy estratégico, ya que es el primer punto viniendo desde el mar, a través de la ría, donde primero se puede cruzar de norte a sur mediante un puente.

Pontevedra is the capital of the province of the same name, situated in the south of Galicia in northwestern Spain. As a provincial capital, is a government town, tourism and services. It is also the head of the region of Pontevedra, and capital from Rias Baixas.

Bordered on the north by the municipalities of Barro and Moran, on the northeast by the city of Campo Lameiro, east with the municipality of Cotobade, southeast with the municipality of Puentecaldelas south with the municipality of Sotomayor, the southwest by the municipalities of Vilaboa and Marin, the west by the Atlantic Ocean (Ria de Pontevedra) and the municipality of Poyo, northwest to the town of Meis. South has a small exit to the Ria de Vigo in the point of El Castillo (in Galician: O Castelo), where a small island (Isla del Castillo) who belongs to the municipality of Pontevedra.

Geography

Pontevedra is in the bottom of the estuary of the same name, at the mouth of Lérez. It is sitting on a relatively flat rocky hill by the erosion, although not very tall, has forced the river Lérez the need to surround the north before opening to the estuary. This means that the only streets that are somewhat steep drop to the zone of seashore and river. This was always very strategic location because it is the first point coming from the sea through the estuary, where it first be crossed from north to south with a bridge.
